The Best Mac Git Gui

Git is one of the most powerful and effective revision control systems available. It’s lightweight and highly configurable, complimenting almost anyone’s programming workflow. Predominately you interact with git from the command line, inputting commands such as `git status` or `git commit` to manipulate your repository.

When you first learn git the CLI can be daunting and confusing. Browsing through your history of commits with `git log` is not efficient. Even after you learn a few tricks such as `git log –graph –oneline –all` it remains difficult to really explore your history.

This is why a git GUI can put the joy back into using git.

Blogging In 2011: A Year In Review

This is my year in review blog post, and oh what an exciting blog post it’s going to be!

2011 was a good year of blogging for me. I managed to kick my addiction of compulsively checking Google Analytics to see how many hits I was getting and instead was able to focus more on just getting words on the screen and out into the interwebs.

With that being said I did crack open Google Analytics today to do a post-mortem of the year and I must say I’m very pleased!

Beirut – The Rip Tide

Beirut is back with their third album. It’s short but remains true to form. Clocking in at 33 minutes and 11 seconds with just 9 tracks you can’t help but come away from the album wanting more despite how solid each of the tracks are. Coming off the seemingly gigantic 13-track sophomore album The Flying Club Cup, The Rip Tide seems much shorter despite actually being only 5 minutes shorter.

Mac OS X Lion Review

Apple released their new operating system earlier this week, Mac OS X Lion. Like most upgrades there’s a lot different from the last version of OS X, most notably Mission Control. It’s an OS upgrade that very much adheres to its maker’s philosophy: opinionated and decisive. Is this good?

I’ve had the pleasure of playing with Lion for the past couple of days. I’ve used it extensively while at work and while lounging at home. Is this upgrade worth your time and money? Read on to find out.

Without Review

The ease of writing – unfiltered and raw -
causes long sentences without break to run-on,
With no interruption and seldom pause in pace
My writing and lyrical prose pose with no sense of space.
For without analysis and self-review,
The writing can often seem stale and far past-due.
And with its stench building in height,
The column of steam evaporates from sight,
Whiffing away without care
And without wonder who put it there.

Because the run-on was not run-down the meaning was far too easily lost drowned in sound.

Improve Your Diet: Go Gluten-Free

Last night I read an article that has all but convinced me to go gluten-free with my diet.

I’ve been in the process of reducing the amount of wheat and grain that I eat, going from highly processed white bread to whole wheat. I’ve also been avoiding unnecessary uses of bread: instead of making a lettuce, tomato, mayo, and turkey sandwich with two slices of bread I now use the lettuce to hold my sandwich together. That, along with other choice improvements in my diet – such as not eating as much – has been largely easy to maintain and keep.

With these changes I’ve seen incredible weight loss (thirty pounds) and improvements in my overall health. I feel better, more energized, and overall more healthy.

Who knew diet could be so powerful? Continue reading

Tips For Buying a Tripod

Who knew buying a tripod could be so complicated?

For the past hour I’ve been trying to track down some good information on what makes a good tripod well, good.  I started off with the preliminary Google search for ‘tripod’ which didn’t exactly pull up too many winning results.  I poked around CNET’s reviews of tripod’s but their interface can confuse and irritate, which it did for me at this occasion.

My second search I let Google help: I typed ‘tripod’ into the Google search bar and waited to see what was the second suggestion.  Turns out ‘tripod reviews’ is searched almost as much as ‘tripods’.  Looking through that search results page didn’t seem to be much of an improvement until I saw two highlighted video results.  One linked to a video hosted on Vimeo.  It was so good that it spawned the creation of this post, and my inclusion of it here.

So if you’re in the market for a new tripod, or interested in what to look for when buying one, take about five minutes to watch this video and learn what’s important.
