Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery

It was about a year ago that I finished work on one of my side projects called The Best & The Worst Project. The concept for the site was simple: people could post their ideas for what was the best of something and what was the worst of something.

After I reached my first working version of the site I mostly lost interest in developing it any further. I didn’t really see a point to it and as such regarded it as a learning experience more than anything else.

This morning I was reading my tech news blogs as I usually do and came upon this article from TechCrunch: Amen Aims To Find The Best Of Everything With A Smart Interface. After only reading the article’s title I was reminded of something very similar…my site that I created a year ago.

As I read the article a grin formed on my face. A year ago I stopped developing the site because I didn’t feel it had legs to grow but it certainly seems there are people out there who disagree. This site is nicely developed and even has an iPhone app to complement the website.

Again, I’m not so sure of how large anyone can take a site based off this idea but it’s certainly encouraging to see I wasn’t the only one with the idea. In fact it’s downright exciting that an idea I had a year ago has seen itself reborn in the eyes of another. Gives me some nice validation that the ideas I have aren’t all just for nothing.

Also you can rest assured that this will only make me work doubly hard on my next site. It’s well under construction and I hope to have it ready for show sometime in the near future. Near future being the upcoming few months or sooner.

And if you haven’t checked it out already, go visit Amen for another twist on my Best & Worst Project idea.

Two Matters of The Mind

The mind is a terrible thing to waste. Yet the wasting of one’s mind cannot always be prevented. There are only so many hours in a day and attempts to complete all desired tasks are unattainable. I won’t dare to state the impossibility of such feats for I am sure those of more unique positions are capable of fulfilling and living their dreams daily, however for myself the possibility of completing all that I wish on a daily basis is close to impossible and far from easy.

It seems that my mind daily rotates from topics of extreme rigidity such as programming and coding, to those of fanciful imaginings such as the poems that I write and sometimes post to this blog. Yet for me to enjoy each of these passions in one day is hard to obtain, for the time spent on each focus – and done well – detracts from the time allowed for the other (all this without concern for the time taken to switch between).

So what am I to do? What I have been doing: working on one topic to its completion and then journeying over to the other focus and resume or begin a work that is otherwise incompatible with the former. Coding and writing both make use of my fingers on the keyboard however the intent and focus of each are at odds. The former requires precision whereas the latter demands freedom. To write a line in a program and then a line in a poem is a feat I have yet to perform nor seen done with seamless integration.

And so I will go forward, as only one can, completing tasks as I am able, learning from all my persuasions and incorporating them while remaining stable.

At Work: Redesign of dLife.com

Redesigning a website is never a light task. Depending on the size and breadth of the existing website it can sometimes be a horribly arduous undertaking. Yet usually redesigns are for the better. Without the pain of change there can be no joy from progress.

For the past couple of months I’ve been living this process. When I first began work at dlife.com I was quickly thrown into the middle of a 100%-top-to-bottom-bottom-to-top website redesign. This redesign was not just a visual overhaul but also an architectural one. Every aspect of the dlife.com website was to be touched, leaving no page un-modified.

Some two weeks ago the redesigned dLife was finally ready to go live. So on February 16th my co-workers and I hunkered down at dLife HQ till the early hours of the morning and launched dLife 2.0.

Take a look at the attached screen-shots to see how dLife looked before and after the redesign. And please – visit dLife.com and enjoy a premier online diabetic resource.

Making A Brain Dump On The Internet

I had an idea the other day to start documenting all the various pieces of information that I’ve collected over my years of living. The types of information I intend to share are those that I have found aren’t common knowledge. The knowledge is more ‘special’. As in – it is highly targeted and specific in its use and application.

In summary, most of the information I intend to share are technical in nature.

However! It is my hope that through the power of words I will make complex concepts easy to understand. Skills that once were mysterious may be shown to be as plain to understand as brushing your teeth. (Which is not to underestimate the difficulty of brushing three times a day.)

I’m starting by fanning out what topics I intend to cover and will slowly update each page with information as time permits.

Get started with the hub page which for now I’m calling Resources. Click here to read my newly created Resources page.

Announcing inipsa llc

I’ve been playing around with web design and development since I was thirteen years old.  That was when I picked up a copy of HTML & CSS For Dummies.  It was also the time of Geocities and HTML3.01.  So many things have changed since then and I’ve done my best to change with them.

That is why I feel that now is a great time to begin offering my skills and services to everyone.  There’s only so many hours in a day that I can spend learning obscure CSS tricks and neat HTML work-arounds.

So, allow me to introduce my web design, web development, general new media service company to you:  inipsa.

It is a word that I made up, one that I hope can find its own meaning as it matures.  So please click over to inipsa’s website (which I designed) and see if I can help you.  Let’s make something!
