100 Posts and College Graduation

This post marks two awesome achievements for me: I have, since last Thursday, been a college graduate, and this is my blog’s 100th post. I was going to post about my graduation on Thursday – when it happened – but I delayed it so that it would strike on the 100th post. For a while I was worried it would take me a while to get to this 100th post, and I’d have to make my college graduation post land on post 99, but I managed to make it work.

Looking back at my high school graduation seems so far away. I can still remember that summer, the one before I left for college: it feels like a vivid dream, so distant in memory yet so close in feeling. I’ve spent many nights looking through photos taken that year, and during my college years, with each photo set eliciting memories long dormant. Each photo always bringing about a strong feeling of nostalgia.

And now here I am, five years later, roughed up, shook up, but still standing. I’m a man with a degree, one that will hopefully safely propel me into the next stage of my life. Coming out of five long years of learning, I hope all my work pays off. I can’t stand the thought of all that work being for waste. I don’t think it will be, but the current job market is scary. I’ll be the first to admit that.

So last week I was a student, and this week I’m unemployed. A chapter of my life is now complete, and I’m excited to find out what happens next. College? Check. 100 posts? Check. Future? Let’s go.

Mayer Hawthorne – A Strange Arrangement

If you live in the New England area and you haven’t gone outside yet today let me save you the trouble:  it’s blisteringly hot out there.  I had the luxury (or medical necessity) of sleeping in late today and I just stepped outside to test the weather, and I think the weather passed its exam with flying colors.  I felt like I had put on a very warm blanket that was smothering the life out of me.  It’s not only hot outside today but it’s as uncomfortable as a jacuzzi in Antarctica – something that I’d love to experience one day.

Hot weather demands hot music; music that moves your feet and gets your booty dancing. To celebrate the blistering heat of today allow me to introduce you to the debut album from Mayer Hawthorne, A Strange Arrangement, an R&B record with soul and character.

Xbox 360 Kinect

In case you didn’t know Microsoft is releasing a new add-on for the Xbox 360 later this year called Kinect. What is Kinect? In brief it is a webcam that you attach to your Xbox 360 that is able to track the motion of your body so as to use your body as the controller for games. What does that mean? I think it’s easier to learn by example so click on over to Mashable to see an upcoming Kinect game being played. Looks really cool to me.
Video embedded below as well.

Official Week of Music – OWoM

This week I am declaring as my Official Week of Music. I haven’t posted an album review or highlighted any good artists in a while and I think it’s time to take some time and do just that. I’ve actually accumulated quite a nice collection of artists and musicians that I am very much itching to write about. I am no longer restricting myself from writing solely of new artists and albums – there are far too many musicians out there that when they enter my realm of music deserve my attention and adulation.

So without further ado, please enjoy Harry Wolff’s Official Week of Music! :)

Learning About MacGuffins

Every day that I learn something new I consider a success. Sometimes these new-found pieces of knowledge are nothing more than old thoughts and ideas repackaged. Or sometimes they’re displayed from a different perspective. Or sometimes they are truly new to my knowledge-base. Whatever the case I take such immense joy from learning.

Last Friday I was at a shoot for the movie Charlie Christ: The Gospel According to Fools, a feature-length film that I’m helping my friends complete. I’ve talked about my involvement with the film before but in case you didn’t see that post here’s a mini-recap: When I was first brought on to help I was only doing web-work. During that time I overhauled their website and redid it to its current state. You can see how it has looked for the past few months at NientePeaches.com.

As time progressed I’ve been stepping up my involvement. Currently I’m fulfilling the role of Line Producer – a job that consists primarily of logistic and systemic work so as to keep the structure of the movie’s production consistent and stable. We’re making great use of many of Google’s free cloud-based software offerings – namely Google Docs and Google Wave. Google Wave has come a long way since it was first introduced to the public. It used to be barely usable due to limited features, slow performance, and frequent crashes. However it is now extremely stable and feature-packed. Right now we’re using Google Wave as our virtual whiteboard in the sky, a task it performs gracefully.

But really the main point of this post was about learning new things. On Friday, at the shoot, I was introduced to the term MacGuffin. When I first heard my friend say that word I was convinced he was making it up. It sounded fanciful and full of farce. It wasn’t until he pointed me to its Wikipedia page with a definition that I was convinced.

According to its Wikipedia page a MacGuffin is:

A MacGuffin (sometimes McGuffin or maguffin) is “a plot element that catches the viewers’ attention or drives the plot of a work of fiction”. The defining aspect of a MacGuffin is that the major players in the story are (at least initially) willing to do and sacrifice almost anything to obtain it, regardless of what the MacGuffin actually is. In fact, the specific nature of the MacGuffin may be ambiguous, undefined, generic, left open to interpretation or otherwise completely unimportant to the plot.

One example sited on the Wikipedia page is the “briefcase with glowing contents in Pulp Fiction” or the island in Lost. It’s the element of the story that pulls together all of its tangents creating a way for the plot to move forward. Neat huh? Can you think of any other examples of MacGuffins?

WordPress 3.0 Has Been Released!

WordPress 3.0, the blogging software that runs this blog, has been officially released to the world – and I have never been more excited.

When I clicked over to the official WordPress blog on Thursday afternoon (which I have been doing every day religiously for the past two weeks) I grew extremely giddy to see the new post read: “WordPress 3.0 “Thelonious””. I was practically jumping in my seat itching to update this blog and begin to play with all the new features that WordPress 3.0 offers. Unfortunately I had a Psychology quiz in two hours that I had to keep studying for. I managed to practice a level of self-restraint that I didn’t know I had.

After my Psych quiz was over and I was finally alone at home I upgraded this blog to 3.0. And then life kicked into overdrive on Friday leaving me with no real time to play until today.

As you can no doubt see I’ve changed the theme of my blog yet again. I have chosen the new default theme for WordPress 3.0 named Twenty Ten. It’s a very clean theme: very easy to read, highly functioning formatting of the website, and it takes advantage of the new features WordPress 3.0 offers. I am going to perform a few tweaks and twirks (I don’t think that word exists) in the near future to get the theme performing as I want it to. I think you’ll agree that it’s much easier on the eyes than the previous theme.

So WordPress 3.0 is out and I am just unbelievably excited. Click through to see a video which highlights some of the best new features WordPress 3.0 has to offer.

Goldeneye 007 coming to the Nintendo Wii

This is the most exciting news I’ve read today.  If you grew up in the 90′s and had a Nintendo 64 console then you played Goldeneye 007.  I was (and still am) a huge fan of Goldeneye 007.  I even tried to play it a few years after it came out when the next generation consoles were released.  The gameplay was still amazing but the graphics were noticeably hurting.  Fret no more!  Fresh from E3, Nintendo has announced they are refreshing Goldeneye 007 and bringing it with all new graphics to the Nintendo Wii. Ars Technica has the full scoop and a picture. I am so excited!
