Newly Redesigned MSNBC Website

Uhm, have you seen the newly redesigned MSNBC.com website? It’s nothing less than amazing. For the first time in my life I may actually be inclined to read and use a news website as its designed. For as long as I can remember I would find articles linked to from aggregating websites, saving me the time from hunting through the websites own confusing website layout. And damn, I’m dying to know what web technologies they’ve put to use, especially with the navigation icons next to the scrollbar. So cool. Check it out now.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows New Trailer

In case you haven’t seen this yet – as it was just released yesterday – a new trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is out. I got chills watching it, remembering what went down in the last Harry Potter book. The trailer, somewhat hyperbolically, states this is the “motion picture event of a generation” but really it kind of is. I, along with many people around the world, grew up reading Harry Potter, waiting for the next book to be released and then rushing home to lock myself in until I finished reading it before it could be ruined. Those were fun days.
Watch the trailer after the break.

Foals – Miami

This isn’t a new song. It’s been out for a while, but I can’t stop playing it today. I find it a nice compliment to the weather: like the weather this song is calm and energetic at times. How wondrous are uncertainties.

The End of My Official Week of Music – OWoM

My Official Week of Music (OWoM TM not pending) has officially drawn to a close. From Monday till Friday I’ve posted almost exclusively about music, with posts about music videos, songs, and three full-length album reviews. To say its been exhausting would be accurate, however an exhaustion that I have fully enjoyed.

I rather enjoyed this arbitrary assignment I enforced on myself. It gave me direction and purpose, allowing me to not worry about what I would write about and just focus on the music – not that I don’t usually do that anyways. However, by knowing that I would need to write a review I listened to the albums much more critically. I left the role of passive listener and stepped into the role of critic with much more frequency.

It was an interesting shift in approach, one that I tend to only perform after listening to an album frequently. Rather, I was approaching these albums – on my first listen-through – with an already critical ear which emphasized different parts of the music that normally I would have ignored. And that’s the reason I generally first approach music passively: I fear I will not enjoy it as much as I could. I fear a type of ‘critic’s curse’ that prevents enjoyment of artwork when approached critically. However by listening to the albums critically I felt myself delve into its sound-scape with greater ease and pace, giving me many more thoughts that I was then able to share with you.

The only downside of this method is the amount of attention and energy it consumes. A leisure activity becomes laborious, sapping one’s energy and tiring them out. The result is welcome, however the time spent consuming the music didn’t allow for its enjoyment. And really that’s why I listen to music: to enjoy it. I’m ready to become a passive listener again; it’s going to be a real joy.

Mayer Hawthorne – A Strange Arrangement

If you live in the New England area and you haven’t gone outside yet today let me save you the trouble:  it’s blisteringly hot out there.  I had the luxury (or medical necessity) of sleeping in late today and I just stepped outside to test the weather, and I think the weather passed its exam with flying colors.  I felt like I had put on a very warm blanket that was smothering the life out of me.  It’s not only hot outside today but it’s as uncomfortable as a jacuzzi in Antarctica – something that I’d love to experience one day.

Hot weather demands hot music; music that moves your feet and gets your booty dancing. To celebrate the blistering heat of today allow me to introduce you to the debut album from Mayer Hawthorne, A Strange Arrangement, an R&B record with soul and character.

Song: Lissie – Pursuit of Happiness (Kid Cudi Cover)

Power song, power chords, powerful voice.  Pretty neat summary of Lissie’s cover of Kid Cudi’s song Pursuit Of Happiness.  Never heard of Lissie before, I don’t even know if it’s just the name of the lead vocalist or the name of the band.  I don’t really care – although I am dreadfully curious – but the song is great.  Thanks to Hype Machine for pointing me in the direction of the song and thank you to The Digital Outhouse for posting it.  Check out their website for the video of the performance.

iPhone 4 Launch

I don’t think many people got a lot of work done today. Between the sweltering weather and the launch of the new iPhone 4, I can only imagine people were doing their best to not get caught slacking off. I was up at the crack of dawn this morning – 6:30am – and stood outside my local Apple store with my friend for the iPhone 4.

I wasn’t even getting the phone, I just figured it’d be a fun thing to do with my buddy who I haven’t seen in a long time. Even though we got there at 6:50am, and the store opened at 7:00am, we were still far back in the Reserved line. Don’t even get me started about how long the non-reserved line was. I feel sorry for those people. Except for the people who brought foldable chairs. Those people I just admire for their smarts.

After waiting in line for an hour we finally got inside and I got my hands on a demo unit. The first thing that came to my mind after picking up the iPhone 4 was how solid it felt. And I heard that word tossed around repeatedly: the iPhone 4 is a solid piece of hardware. Getting past the great and comforting heft of the device is the screen. The screen is glorious. Seriously. It’s so clear that I caught myself squinting at text on the screen – due to habit – and realizing that there was absolutely no need to strain my sight. The screen is vivid and absolutely gorgeous.

Past that the ‘multi-tasking’ of iOS 4 was very snazzy. After you activate the multi-task feature and hold your finger on an app you are presented with the option to exit out of open apps. This process was much easier than I could have ever imagined. I was expecting to receive a confirmation box asking if I “was sure I wanted to close that app” but no, iOS calmly and serenely closed the app without any fuss or mess. So lovely.

Unfortunately I’m stuck on my family’s plan on Verizon. If I could get the iPhone 4 I would, however I am not in the financial position to strike out on my own on AT&T. I saw the Motorola Droid X is coming out on Verizon in July and it looks really nice. I’m quite tempted to get it, Verizon iPhone rumors be-damned. But for now I’ll chug along on my BlackBerry Tour, and try and keep my complaints to myself. For all you out there with the new iPhone 4 I have only one thing to say to you: FACETIME!!!

The Roots – How I Got Over

As I wrote yesterday The Roots have released their new album today, How I Got Over. I’m not an old fan of The Roots: the first album I heard of theirs was The Tipping Point, which I liked but didn’t get much replay from me. Over the years I’ve heard more of their music and gotten to know who they are as a band. Especially with their latest stint as Jimmy Fallon’s band.

After listening to How I Got Over I found myself liking it about the same as their last albums. As I said before, I’m not a huge Roots fan but this album is fairly solid. The highlight is without a doubt the track that shares the album’s name, How I Got Over. With a drum beat running at a nice clip, a mellow piano played over, and accompanied by strong vocals during the chorus, it stands out as immediately catchy and deserving of repeat listens.

However there’s other tracks on the album that do the same. Most of the tracks feature a strong drum beat, solid instrumentals over it, and a strong chorus that more-or-less pulls the song together. Really, I feel as though the album is comprised of songs with strong choruses and verses that go on for longer than anticipated. The chorus’ are undoubtedly catchy, but the adjacent verses come off as bland and repetitious.

I’m impressed The Roots were able to put together a full LP while moonlighting as the resident band on Jimmy Fallon. For that I give them major kudos. However the album itself I found – while enjoyable and calm – mostly unoriginal and bland. It’s good to put on in the background but I don’t see it ever taking center stage on my stereo.

Xbox 360 Kinect

In case you didn’t know Microsoft is releasing a new add-on for the Xbox 360 later this year called Kinect. What is Kinect? In brief it is a webcam that you attach to your Xbox 360 that is able to track the motion of your body so as to use your body as the controller for games. What does that mean? I think it’s easier to learn by example so click on over to Mashable to see an upcoming Kinect game being played. Looks really cool to me.
