Spring Cleaning

wpid-fileCabinets.6PUCdTGyg2BO.jpgThe importance of keeping things organized is a time consuming act. I like knowing exactly where my belongings are. I get great joy from being able to tell someone with complete certainty if I have the item they want and exactly where it can be found.

This type of organization and categorization doesn’t happen overnight. I spend a lot of time making sure that everything belongs somewhere. If something doesn’t belong somewhere then I invent where it should be belong. Sometimes I pick the wrong place and have to revise my categorizations. Usually I kick myself for lacking the proper foresight to predict with absolute certainty where something belongs, but as the old saying goes, “Hindsight is 20-20.” So I try and leave my behind as kick-free as possible.

How Do You Listen to Music?

wpid-music.kHe5cnxAMiXD.jpgThis past weekend I had the opportunity to visit with old friends. As we are prone to do we had many different sessions of playing and enjoying music. We practiced and performed a make shift harmonization of The Postal Service’s song Such Great Heights and got down and bluesy to The Beatles’ Rocky Raccoon.

In the midst of the night a friend and I began discussing what each of us look for when we listen to music.

The first thing I pay attention to when I listen to a song is its timbre, i.e. the feel of the song. I attune my ear to the manner in which the song is delivered and can usually tell if I like a song within the first ten-seconds of hearing it.

When I’ve decided that the timbre is of favorable quality I then turn my attention to more technical aspects of the song-making process. I isolate the melody and chorus, breaking down how they’re arranged and attempting to discern why I like them. After rolling them around my head a couple of times I then try to isolate other layers of the song, mentally isolating background pads from guitar leads to see how and why they work. The last part of a song that I pay attention to is the lyrics. I’ll notice the way the lyrics are sung quickly but I don’t focus on their actual content until the end.

My friend began telling me how he listens to music. He focuses on the technical aspects of a song first and works his way from there – ending on its timbre. Usually he and I agree on what songs we enjoy listening to but every so often there’s a diversion. Maybe it’s due to the way we listen to music, or maybe its just taste.

All I know is that music plays a very large part in my life. No matter how I listen, I know that I love to listen.

An Update in Haiku

Without internet-
Weathered, tired, and busy:
Still obligated.

My interpretation of my haiku: I was without power for the past week. Although I regained power on Friday my internet access is still down. This makes updating a blog extremely difficult. In fact I’m posting this from my BlackBerry Tour (thank goodness for 3G).

In any case expect fuller posts when I regain internet access. Until then I hope you’ve enjpyed my haiku.

Update: Internet access has been restored!  Praise Cablevision!  More posts to follow.

Mother Nature Bests Technology

It’s very hard to post anything new when there isn’t any power.

My hometown was hit very badly by the storm that passed through New England this past weekend. There were 80mph winds and lots of rain. Although I I was out of town and didn’t see the storm myself I saw the aftermath when I arrived home Sunday night. My entire town is in disarray.

It was (and still is) very surreal. It is also an extremely humbling reminder of Mother Nature’s tremendous power.

I’ll keep you updated.

New Design, Same Direction

In case you haven’t noticed I am now using a new design. I changed it this afternoon but I haven’t had a chance to gab about it until now.

This new theme is called blog.txt and is the hard work of a fellow named Scott. Thanks Scott for your work!

I hope this design makes for easier reading. I also hope this design encourages me to make more unique pages instead of just updates.

Whatever the case may be, I hope your Thursday is sunny and cheery. I just love sunlight. :)

Broken Bells – Broken Bells (and why ticketmaster angers me)

Ever heard of The Shins? They were a nice indie success with songs such as Phantom Limb and New Slang (which was featured in the movie Garden State).

Ever heard of DJ Danger Mouse? He broke onto the music scene when he released his amazing mix-tape The Grey Album – a mash-up of Jay-Z’s Black Album and The Beatle’s White Album. It has amazing tracks that remove the need to imagine what Jay-Z would sound like rapping over the music of The Beatles (he’s also half the duo of Gnarls Barkley).

To the delight of fans DJ Danger Mouse and The Shins’ lead singer and guitarist James Mercer joined creative forces and formed their own band. They named themselves Broken Bells and their debut album comes out today, March 9th 2010.

3 MP3 Tuesday

Not much to say here. I got three (3) new songs that I want to share. Let’s get on with it.

First up we got a new budding group calling themselves 1,2,3. They’re coming at you from Pittsburgh, PA and they got some sweet energy. Check them out on their MySpace page, but for now hear their slick tune “Confetti.”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Next is a tune that’s a little slower than what you just heard, but it has just as much energy. Band’s named Local Natives (according to their wiki page they used to be called Cavil at Rest – choice name change) and they hail from Los Angeles, CA. A lot of voice is used in their songs and this one is no exception. Dig on Airplanes:

Also check out their live performance on La Blogotheque.

Last and definitely not least is the chilled brother-sister duo Angus & Julia Stone. They come from down-under – specifically Sydney, Australia – and they got a very smooth groove. Get loving with their Paper Aeroplane:

That does it for now. Kinda weird that two songs were about airplanes. But hey – if you want to celebrate that unusual occurrence you’re more than welcome throw around some Confetti.

Mid-terms take up a lot of time

I should be studying for my Geology mid-term right now. I’m not, obviously.

Right now I am going through mid-terms – and they suck. They take up so much time to study for them – not to mention all the time I spend simply stressing about them.

This is why I haven’t been posting regularly. Well, I guess I have, but I feel like my post contents have been lacking. Expect some new music reviews later this week.

On a related-note: Did you know that Connecticut is an earthquake state? Did you know that Connecticut existed on the equator during Pangea? Did you know that there are hundreds of amazing and rock-solid puns one can make in a Geology class? It’s like a Rocky Horror picture show in there at times!
